How Often Should I Get A Massage?

This is a question I’ve been asked a few times recently, so I wanted to take a minute to share some thoughts on this.

Here are my thoughts for most people:

Weekly or biweekly massage therapy or CST sessions might be for you if you are experiencing a time when you need extra support, either because of life transitions, stress, or chronic pain. For some, more frequent time on the table for a few months can be a helpful intervention for coming back in to balance. You can think of this as training in resting and in feeling your body. And for some folks, biweekly sessions for a longer period can be a helpful approach to wellness and healing.

Monthly sessions might be for you if you are looking to incorporate massage therapy or CST into your life because of the wellness benefits—maybe you’ve found that massage helps you sleep better, that it increases your body awareness, that it leaves you feeling lighter and more relaxed. The consistency of monthly sessions can allow you to build massage or CST into your routine as a kind of anchor—ahh, table time. This is a space where I can be really kind to myself. Really come home to myself and be still. We often think in terms of months, and the lunar cycle of just about a month is still powerful, even in our modern lives! So there’s something really grounding to this kind of rhythm.

Sessions every 6-8 weeks could work better for you if more frequent appointments feel like too much. Maybe you want to care for yourself by receiving attuned and intentional touch, but you’ve found that a monthly appointment just doesn’t work with your schedule or budget. In this case, taking more time between sessions may provide the best balance of receiving care and respecting your other responsibilities.

Seasonal massages or CST sessions can be a great way of creating intentional space to check in with yourself, feel supported, and balance your energy as we progress through the year.

And for some people, occasion massages are where it’s at. You moved. You’re starting a new job. It’s your birthday. A massage to celebrate, or to be held in a time of difficulty, can be really sweet.

The truth is—we’re constantly changing, and so are our needs. So my invitation to you is to feel into that question for yourself. There’s no right or wrong answer, just your answer.

I’ll see you on the table when it’s the right time for you!
